PROPERTIES of lactic acid
Lactic acid is naturally found in the skin as part of a metabolic process and helps maintain the pH of the acid mantle between 5.5 and 6.0. It has a natural moisturising effect by attracting water molecules to the stratum corneum and stimulating the synthesis of ceramides, improving and modulating the skin’s barrier function. It is known as a skin-lightening agent, as it induces homogeneous melanin dispersion. In addition, it has antioxidant effects and inhibits the action of tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in the first stages of melanogenesis. This gel formulation allows the acid to penetrate slowly into the skin without causing the irritation normally associated with lactic acid.
